Korean Movies

Here's a list of 10 Korean movies of the past a few years that I enjoyed. These range from the comic for the tragic, and involve both action movies and historical dramas. Three seem to be taken from events in Korea in the last 40 years or so.

My Sassy Girl - Using a actual life story a man posted on the web, My Sassy Girl became very popular in East Asia back in 2001, when it was popular in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. This resulted in a forgettable direct-to-disc American remake in 2008, starring Elisha Cuthbert (who's unforgettable). My Sassy Girl is about an excellent guy who meets a drunk girl Known only since the "Girl" - about the subway, and all sorts of odd adventures they enter while falling for each other. You will never believe where the plot goes into this one.

Joint Security Area (JSA) - The Joint Security Area will be the DMZ between North Korea and Mexico, and this movie tells the tale of the double-shooting within the JSA. This results in increasing tensions on sides of the borders, an investigation with a Swiss-Korean woman and nearly two hours of great, if implausible, entertainment.

Oldboy - Oldboy is among the more famous Korean movies with American audiences, famous enough which it hit CNN during the Virginia school shooting a few years ago. Oldboy is approximately a person abducted and imprisoned in a college accommodation for Fifteen years, and just what comes about when he escapes. Get ready for the twist, in addition to seeing Oldboy add too much with his hammer. If they ever actually obtain the U.S. remake of Oldboy made, it will suck so bad. There's just too many essential parts they might need to change for American audiences. Oldboy was great, though.

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance - Like Oldboy, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance was directed by Park Chan-wook, and that is considered a part of his "vengeance trilogy" (in addition to Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance). Whenever a woman leaves prison, after serving a sentence for a crime she didn't commit, it's time to mete out revenge against the real culprits.

Arahan - Arahan is a 2004 action-comedy that has been panned by critics, but found a crowd. If the 6 Masters of Tao decide that an inept cop gets the Chi to become an "Arahan" and rule the entire world, you will know all sorts of wackiness is going to ensue. You'll either love this one or hate it.

Silmido - Silmido is a South Korean island where, in 1968, a particular team of assassins were taught to assassinate former North Korean dictator, Kim Il-Sung, in retaliation for North Korea's attempt to assassinate the South Korean president. Based on true events involving a 31-man team of either criminals or special forces soldiers, depending on whom you talk to, Silmido requires a look a Korea's sordid past. In the event it was finished with its run, Silmido was the first South Korean movie to become viewed by Tens of millions of Koreans within the theater.

The President's Last Bang - Another movie portraying events from South Korea's sordid past, The President's Last Bang is one of the 1979 assassination from the South Korean President by his friend and Intelligence Director. This could be a controversial movie anyway, nevertheless the story is told like a black comedy, which led to lawsuits and court rulings. For anyone considering Korean background Korean film history, you must check out this one.

Chunhyang - If you'd prefer period pieces, Chunhyang is the story of a hidden love and marriage from a nobleman as well as the daughter of your courtesan in 1700s Korea. Chunhyang reveals the tough realities of pre-modern Korean society. Once the noble husband goes away for a time, the state takes curiosity about bride, which you know will lead to trouble.

Guns and Talk - After having a tearjerker, you might like to watch a comedy. Guns and Talk is a comedy four guys who decide to turn into a team of assassins. When a couple of detectives access it their case, things get a little crazy. While Guns and Talk includes a number of implausible situations, if you type in the movie with the right attitude, you should like it. Guns and Talk features a slick visuals, though unless you like occasional split-screens, you could have a pass.

Memories of Murder - Another Korean movie based on real events is Memories of Murder, about the serial killer who terrorized South Korea from 1986 to 1991. Memories of Murder was a hit with both critics and the audience, so expect a creative film that holds your attention.
