By then Collinske also was working for Long Beach police, and Farinella said most people weren鈥檛 surprised when she broke the news. She added that there was little, if any, negative reaction.鈥淚 think when you stay in the closet, you contribute to the secrecy,鈥?she said. 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 give a person an opportunity to know a gay person, they don鈥檛 have a reference point.鈥漇he became the department鈥檚 liaison to Long Beach鈥檚 large LGBT community, one of many roles she had reaching out to a wide range of community groups. She helped create advisory groups, meeting monthly to hear how the department looked from their point of view.Farinella also hoped that, as a gay woman, she would provide an example to help gay recruits comfortably join the department.鈥淚鈥檓 here, in a uniform, saying 鈥楾his is an acceptable work environment where you鈥檙e judged on your ethics and work. That comes first,鈥欌€?Farinella said.鈥淚 feel I can leave (the Long Beach department) knowing that there are good gay leaders and straight supporters.鈥滾aguna Beach figures to be a different police experience than what she鈥檚 seen in Long Beach, a less affluent, more diverse city with about 20 times the population of Laguna. In Long Beach, police issues include gangs and violent crime; in Laguna, the big problems include traffic, tourism and the occasional bar brawl.Still, Farinella sees some similarities. The Long Beach districts of Naples, Belmont Shore, Belmont Heights and downtown are comparable to Laguna Beach. And, she said, wherever there are restaurants and shops near the water, there are lots of people and with them comes potential for police engagement.鈥淚 will never turn this (police department) into Long Beach, but I will take my knowledge from there here,鈥?Farinella said.In both areas, she said, community policing is key.In fact, her role in community policing 鈥?talking with locals and taking a proactive role in neighborhood safety 鈥?is part of why she was picked to replace former Laguna Beach Police Chief Paul Workman, who retired last year after 30 years on the force.鈥淪he鈥檚 had a lot of success with community outreach,鈥?said John Pietig, the Laguna Beach city manager who hired Farinella.鈥淪he comes from a good department that has produced many chiefs in this region.鈥滺er longtime mentor in Long Beach, former Chief Jim McDonnell, who recently became Los Angeles County Sheriff, also pointed to Farinella鈥檚 ability to integrate the police force into the community it serves.鈥淟aura gets that role and believes we are stronger and better when we work with the community and are not just in the community,鈥?McDonnell said.Though Farinella spent her career working up the ladder in Long Beach, she said she鈥檚 had her eye on Laguna Beach for years.鈥淚 have always loved Laguna. When John offered me the job, I felt like I got the golden ticket.鈥漌hile Farinella acknowledges the significance of being the county鈥檚 first gay chief, it鈥檚 not what she most wants to be recognized for.鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 matter if you鈥檙e a woman or if you鈥檙e gay. What matters is that you have the skill set. Having those diverse perspectives is icing on the cake.鈥滷arinella didn鈥檛 always have her mind set on police work. She graduated from Chapman University with a bachelors degree in communication and was working in a grocery store in 1989 when she decided to become a cop.She says she wanted to be part of a team that drove police cars and caught bad guys.In Long Beach, she held virtually every rank. She started as a patrol officer, but also worked as a field training officer, an Internal Affairs sergeant and as chief of staff for McDonnell.When McDonnell left Long Beach late last year, Farinella was named deputy chief, the first woman to hold that position in the department鈥檚 107-year history.For now, Farinella says her greatest challenge in her new job is understanding how the police force works with the community. To that end, she took two weeks of her vacation from Long Beach to meet with each of the 46 officers in the Laguna Beach Police Department, asking them what the department does well and what it doesn鈥檛.鈥淚鈥榤 open to everyone鈥檚 new ideas,鈥?she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e told them 鈥楧on鈥檛 be offended if I ask why we do something a certain way.鈥?I don鈥檛 mean that the wrong way. I just want to find the best way.鈥滷ormer Laguna Beach Police Capt. Danell Adams sees Farinella鈥檚 appointment as important in two ways.First, she welcomes a return to community policing. It was key in the 1990s, when former Chief Neil Purcell ran the force, but has faded over the years, according to Adams.But Adams also views Farinella in historical terms. When Adams pursued the job of chief several years back, she said, it was clear there was a 鈥渃oncern about me being gay.鈥濃€淚t was this little, quiet, in the background, thing.
