@@@ The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife claims that we have a problem with bears in our state. I contend that they are the ones who created this problem by allowing artificial feeding.

Yellowstone National Park was well known for their bear problem. They now have closed their open garbage pits, installed bear-proof garbage cans, and stopped allowing people to feed the bears. They no longer have a problem. In fact, you can consider yourself lucky if you see a bear in Yellowstone today.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife also claim that they need the cruel techniques of baiting, trapping and hounding to control the bear population. This is not true. Once artificial feeding is stopped, the bear population will settle back down to levels that nature can support. Any bears that become a danger to the public can be captured in large drums. This is a tried and true technique, which has been used for years. It is both efficient and does not harm the animal.

Furthermore, it astounds me that the Sportsman s Alliance of Maine would support the clearly unsportsmanlike techniques of baiting, trapping and hounding. Once you start feeding an animal, don t you take the wild out of them and turn them into a pet? How much respect can be endowed on someone who shoots their pet? How can you respect someone who shoots an animal that is chained to a tree via a leg trap? Where is the skill in killing an animal that has been cornered or treed by a pack of vicious dogs?

Return our bear population back to natural levels, and bring respect back to hunting in Maine. Vote yes on 1.
