(Monken gives compliments to Mullen, Freeze)
(NEW YORK- Ratings record for AMC's 'Walking Dead'_0)

HATTIESBURG -- During Southern Miss' bye week, Golden Eagles football coach Todd Monken had a chance to give his players more individual time from the staff.
+
NEW YORK The Nielsen Company says the 17.3 million people who watched the fifth season opener of "The Walking Dead" Sunday is a record both for the show and for a cable television program.
And he also kept an eye on things to the north.
+
Nielsen said that represented the biggest audience ever for a single non-sports program on cable TV. The AMC drama beat its previous record audience of 16.1 million for the fourth season opener last October.
"Hats off to Dan Mullen and Hugh Freeze," he said.
+
"The Walking Dead" also had a staggering 11 million viewers among 18-to-49-year-olds, considered most valuable to advertisers. That beats every other scripted show on TV this season, with CBS' premiere of "The Big Bang Theory" coming closest with 6.9 million in that demographic.
As most every college football fan in the nation knows, Mullen's Mississippi State team and Freeze's Ole Miss squad each came up with a couple of big victories over highly-ranked teams the past couple of Saturdays. As a consequence, MSU is ranked first and Ole Miss third in this week's Associated Press and Amway Coaches college football polls.
+
Those numbers will only increase when time-delayed viewership is counted in. The discussion show, "The Talking Dead," had 6.9 million viewers.<p>Related Articles:</p><ul><li><a href=http://www.louisvuitton-pascher.com>Louis Vuitton Siracusa</a></li><li><a href=http://www.louisvuitton-pascher.com>Louis Vuitton Sistina</a></li><li><a href=http://www.louisvuitton-pascher.com>Louis Vuitton Speedy</a></li></ul>
"They've done a great job," Monken said. "Tremendous coaches."
+
Monken tried to visualize how their success would affect both the Mississippi State and Ole Miss and USM's recruiting.
+
"They're going to get better players now," he said. "They're going to put themselves in a market where maybe they weren't before. So we can only go by the guys that we have the opportunity of recruiting that want to come here and play at Southern Miss.
+
"I don't know how it affects it one way or another but I think they've both done a great job. "We've got to go and recruit and try to keep players here and be a part of something special and put this place back at the top."
+
To do that, Southern Miss needs to improve. While there have been some bright spots -- the 31 points and 537 offensive yards put up in its last game, against Middle Tennessee State -- the inconsistency of the Eagles has been a main cause of the 2-4 record, 0-2 in Conference USA.
+
This Saturday (6 p.m., American Sports Network), USM will play at North Texas (2-4, 0-2) at Denton, Texas.
+
"We've done everything we could in the last two games to kill momentum," Monken said. "Every time we've made a play, we've had a setback. It hasn't been in one area, it's been in all areas.
+
"When we get to the point where we're not doing those things, and carrying momentum over, then you'll see the progression that I think we're capable of making. But right now, we find a way to take a step back. That's what we've been doing this past week, how do we keep momentum in a game and put pressure on your opponent."
+
Monken said he expects to have running back Jalen Richard and defensive end Dylan Bradley available to play this week after missing time with injuries.
+
Starting quarterback Nick Mullins, who passed for 426 yards in a 37-31 loss to Middle Tennessee in USM's last game on Oct. 4, said Monday that the team is ready to get back to work to prepare for North Texas after taking the weekend off.
+
"We're treating this game as a must-win," he said. "We need it for a bowl game."
+
Teams must have six wins to be eligible for a bowl.<p>Related Articles:</p><ul><li><a href=http://www.louisvuitton-pascher.com>Louis Vuitton Evora</a></li><li><a href=http://www.louisvuitton-pascher.com>Louis Vuitton Galliera</a></li><li><a href=http://www.louisvuitton-pascher.com>Louis Vuitton Lockit</a></li></ul>
