Reports coming from the North-East, especially in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, over the ongoing insurgency in the region are in no way cheering. Apart from killings and other atrocities being perpetrated by Boko Haram insurgents, women, who have fled their towns and villages due to insecurity of lives and properties, now give birth in droves in camps reserved for internally displaced persons in the zone, despite the sorry state of the camps and pitiable conditions of the 鈥樷€檙efugees鈥欌€?  reports JAMES BWALA.

FOR Salihu Mohammed, a resident of Maiduguri, his disgust for the activities of Boko Haram and people who have been disturbing the peace of Borno State and others in the North-East, knows no bounds. To him, the havoc done by the insurgents to the people of the region cannot be measured, citing the hardship of women who give birth to children at camps across the region as the latest example.

What is baffling to Mohammed, however, is whether the women got pregnant before fleeing their villages, or whether they came about their pregnancies while sojourning in the camps.

鈥淒id they become pregnant while in camps? If yes, who are those responsible for the pregnancies? It is necessary to have information about all these, because what came to mind when I heard the news was that, could it be that women are being assaulted in the camps across the zone?

鈥樷€橧f not, are their husbands are responsible for the pregnancies? If yes, one could then ask why putting their wives in a family way at this moment when life appears precarious for them,鈥欌€?he asked.

Findings made by Sunday Tribune revealed that no fewer than 16 women have given birth in past weeks, despite the terrible health condition in the camps.

鈥樷€橳here has been cholera outbreak in some of the camps, yet women keep giving birth there.  In Adamawa, Borno and Gombe states, over 30 people have so far been delivered of babies,鈥欌€?said an official of one of the camps in Maiduguri.

According to Tukur Shuiabu, a worker at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Maiduguri, where over 7,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are camped, the hardship being faced by the nursing mothers is unimaginable, especially with the spread of cholera in the camps.

He told Sunday Tribune that government, both at federal and state levels, is doing a lot to ameliorate living conditions in the camps, saying the people themselves should complement government鈥檚 efforts by being hygienic and keeping their environment clean.

He said the cause of cholera in the camps was not unconnected with the dirty habits of the people, while at the same time lamenting dearth of medication in the camps.

The Adamawa State government is also reported to have given assurance that the internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently taking refuge at the NYSC orientation camp in Bajabure would receive government attention while still in the camp.

Speaking to the displaced persons, Secretary to the Adamawa State government, Professor Abdullahi Liman Turkur, said those sick among the people in the camps would receive medical attention, while sanitary conditions of the camp would be improved upon.

Similarly, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that 11 pregnant women have so far given birth at two camps in Maiduguri. The agency, in a statement by its North East zonal information officer, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, revealed that 10 of the women who gave birth had normal deliveries at the camps while the eleventh one was taken to the General Hospital, Biu, where she was delivered of a baby after a Caesarean Session (CS).

Ibrahim told reporters that the newly delivered mothers were, apart from the normal relief materials, given baby items to assist them.

It was also gathered that not fewer than 10 women among the over 5,000 internally displaced persons from Gwoza and other communities in Borno State, following attacks by insurgents, have been delivered of their babies at a camp established in Mubi South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

At another camp, located at Lamurde Local Government Day Secondary School, Mubi South of Adamawa State, it was learnt that the women had normal deliveries. It was gathered that the Adamawa State government, Mubi South, Mubi North and Maiha local governments have been taking care of the refugees by donating drugs and food items, while the Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Abubakar Isa Ahmadu, donated N3 million to the refugees.

Sunday Tribune also gathered that Fatima, a 19-year-old nursing mother, who hails from Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, was recently delivered of a bouncing baby in the camp after fleeing Damboa for the camp when Boko Haram insurgents attacked the town.

It was learnt that it wasn鈥檛 long after the nursing mother got married to her husband, Modu, and took in that the insurgents visited the town, thus making her to flee.

The young mother, who spoke to newsmen, said 鈥淲hile some of our people fled towards Biu, we had to run on foot towards Maiduguri,鈥?recalled Fatima, who fled with the rest of the frightened residents of Damboa.

鈥淢y pregnancy was 7 months old then, and I was too heavy to run, but I had to run for my dear life. My husband supported me as we walked and jogged through the bush till we arrived at Maiduguri,鈥?she continued.

In Maiduguri, Fatima and hundreds of other displaced people were camped at the NYSC orientation camp where government and good Samaritans cater for them.

As it is now, life remains precarious for victims of Boko Haram, especially women, who seem to be oblivious of the security situations that turned them to refugees, as well as the pitiable living conditions where they are camped, and yet get pregnant in droves, only to give birth to babies away from home.
