According to a 1932 review syndicated in newspapers across the country: For children who love to be read to and for children just learning to read, there are probably no better books than the Really Truly Stories of Sadyebeth Anson Lowitz. The book was said to make history human, understandable and absorbing to inquisitive youngsters and its amusing illustrations and pertinent text is sure to entertain parents almost as much as their youthful audience.

As late as 1973, critics were still raving about The Cruise of Mr. Christopher Columbus, then priced at $1, calling it a fresh, charming retelling for children of the life and voyages of Columbus. (Forty years fresh, anyway.) The tenth and final edition was published by Dell in 1977. According to Worldcat, copies of the book are , though it s unclear if any of these copies are in circulation.

I mean, yes, Columbus was born years and years before anyone lived in your town if you eliminate the Native Americans, who almost definitely lived in your town. Oh and also, it s not your town. Keep that in mind, as the idea that one can possess a geographic area is relevant.

Had Ateneo gone all the way in the UAAP men鈥檚 basketball tournament this season, prized guard Kiefer Ravena would most probably have taken his talents to the pro ranks next year.

鈥溾€榊un na talaga ang plano ko nu鈥檔g umpisa pa lang. Kung sakaling mag-champion kami this year, magpi-PBA na talaga ako,鈥?he stressed in an interview with a handful of sports scribes on Friday night inside a local restaurant in Greenhills, San Juan, two days after hoisting the collegiate league鈥檚 highest individual award鈥攈is first in his already decorated young career.

Even his mother, former volleybelle Mozzy, admitted Kiefer was showing signs of making the big leap to the pro league long before the Season 77 started. 鈥淚鈥檓 not sure about sa plano niyang 鈥榶un pero ramdam ko talaga nu鈥檔g umpisa pa lang ng season na parang gan鈥檜n na ang plano niya,鈥?said the former University of Santo Tomas star.

That plan, however, was derailed after the Blue Eagles failed to utilize their twice-to-beat edge in the Final Four against the National U Bulldogs and were eliminated, becoming just the second top-seeded team to make a stunning exit in the semis.

Although that big season collapse left a bitter taste in his mouth, the 6-foot Ravena still sees a silver lining in the horizon. 鈥淗indi pa siguro gusto ni God (na mag-PBA ako). Gusto niya siguro na sabihin sa akin na jaunting tiyaga pa,鈥?he noted.

Despite being reduced to a mere spectator at the sidelines for the second straight season, Ravena was still glad his close buddies, guard Gelo Alolino of NU and Far Eastern U counterpart Mike Tolomia, are going at it for the ultimate prize, both gunning for their first-ever UAAP title in what promises to be an explosive winner-take-all match this Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

鈥淪abi ko nga sa kanya (Alolino), sabihin mo kay Mike huwag na kayo magpraktis. Magkita-kita na lang kayo sa laro. Kasi it all boils down to the final game. Magandang laban talaga 鈥榶un sa Wednesday,鈥?he noted. 鈥淲ala ka nang ia-adjust. I think FEU played all out in the first game then NU adjusted (in Game 2) so nakita na nila lahat 鈥榶ung kailangan nilang makita. It鈥檚 just the players鈥?game talaga.鈥?br>
Ravena, however, refused to make a prediction ahead of the deciding match.

鈥淔EU鈥檚 edge is their offensive prowess. Hindi mo alam kung sino ang i-score,鈥?he noted. 鈥淪cary thing about FEU is Mac (Belo) hasn鈥檛 played well in both games. Eventually law of averages will catch up. At the same time, Mike is playing consistent. (Achie) Inigo is always there. And so is (Anthony) Hargrove.

鈥淭apos sa NU naman 'yung system nila. I鈥檓 not saying na walang sistema si (FEU) coach Nash (Racela) but 鈥榶ung sa NU, it鈥檚 been there ever since talaga. 鈥榊un ang nagdala sa kanila all throughout the season. No one really separated from their group, on what they run on offense and especially on defense.鈥?br>
Convinced the two team鈥檚 imports鈥擟ameroonian center Alfred Aroga and FEU's Hargrove, an American鈥攁nd their prized forwards鈥擳roy Rosario and Belo鈥攚ill just cancel each other out, Ravena believes it is how Alolino and Tolomia, his former teammates in the Philippine national youth team, will play in the deciding encounter that will serve as the biggest difference.

鈥淚t will still boil down to Mike and Gelo, how will they close it out. As leaders of their teams, you take it upon yourself in finding a way to win. Especially for both of them who are gunning for their first UAAP championship. 鈥榊ung mindset nu鈥檔g dalawa, they will give everything na makakaya nila,鈥?he stressed.

That explains why Ravena refused to put his money on a particular team. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 project any winner since both mentalities are going to be the same,鈥?he noted. 鈥淗indi ka pwedeng maging complacent, hindi rin naman pwedeng tumodo manggigil. Kasi kapag nanggigil ka, you won鈥檛 have another game to settle down. Kapag relax ka naman, especially against a team like NU and FEU, they will really take advantage on how you will start.鈥?br>
Whatever happens on the fate of his close friends, Ravena vowed he will come back even better next year, his eyes set on making it back to the Promised Land. 鈥淛ust like what I told coach Bo (Perasol), I want to leave a legacy on Ateneo on my last year. I really want to leave the school with a championship,鈥?he said.
