Parks inspire a sense of community and Long Beach is home to more than 100 of them, two of which are named after fallen police officers men who dedicated their lives to serve and protect.Officer Daryle Black and Cpl. Edward Davenport left behind a legacy, not only with the Long Beach Police Department, but within the communities they served. The first of these two parks, Officer Daryle W. Black Memorial Park, is located in Central Long Beach, in the same neighborhood that Black patrolled and died in.

Black joined the LBPD in 1994 and served for six years in the gang detail unit. Daryle was extremely dedicated and extremely complimentary of the good work done by other officers and the good actions of citizens, said LBPD East Division Cmdr. Paul LeBaron, who worked patrol with Black for several years. He would always look at a situation and tell you what was right about that situation. Although Black did not have any children of his own, he dedicated his time working with at-risk youth in the neighborhood, particularly kids who had been drawn into the gang life.

On April 29, 2000, he was on patrol with his partner, Rick Delfin, when Ramon Sandoval Jr., a Compton gang member, ambushed their vehicle and fired several shots with an assault rifle. Black suffered two gunshot wounds to the head and Delfin was also hit, but not fatally so he was able to speed away and radio for help. Both officers were transported to a local hospital, where Black, 33, succumbed to his wounds about an hour later. His was the first violent death of an LBPD officer in nearly 25 years.

Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews said it was one of the biggest tragedies, not only in the district, but in the city. We never think something like this will happen, Andrews said. The second of these parks, Ed Pops Davenport Park, is located in North Long Beach, and is dedicated to a man who gave decades of his life to the department, the community and the city.LBPD Officer Cpl. Edward Davenport moved to Long Beach with his family when he was 1 year old. He later graduated from Jordan High School, and in 1956 he married his wife, Beverly. He entered the Air Force that same year and joined the LBPD six years later.

Davenport served a 40-year career, spending more than 30 years as a member of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT). In 2001, he was the recipient of the Richard A. Rose Career Achievement Award, presented to officers who serve more than 20 years on the force and have demonstrated outstanding loyalty, integrity and professionalism. He understood how to be a police officer at his core, he said. He understood that there is a right way to do things and if you do things the right way, you will earn the respect that you deserve. LeBaron said he remembers Cpl. Davenport from his early days at the academy and the department firing range, where Davenport also served as range master. I was one of the young officers who would come to the range, and there was never a time I was not compelled to call him sir, he said. He commanded and earned the respect given to him from day one.

It was at that firing range, on Feb. 3, 2003, that Davenport suffered his fatal accident while he was performing some routine maintenance in effort to save the city a little money. Shortly after, a department employee found him lying on the ground in full cardiac arrest. LeBaron said Davenport is still spoken of with reverence in the department. He said that just as Davenport was a valuable asset to the department and the community, a park is valuable to community members because it is their home away from home. Spanning 11.5 acres, Ed Pops Davenport Park is located at 2910 E. 55th Way, between Candlewood and South streets in North Long Beach. The park offers residents a generous amount of open space, including a gated playground, a soccer field, walking trail, picnic area and two half-court basketball courts.

LeBaron said the park is located in a very strong family neighborhood, whose residents enjoy spending time there. With all the families there, parks are a good place to strengthen the community, he said. LeBaron said both parks are a fitting tribute to the officers and that although Black and Davenport came from different generations, they epitomized what the LBPD was all about. They were well-respected because of the way they handled themselves and the way they treated other people, he said. They will never be replaced in this department and they will always be missed.
