Why did participants in a recent Cond茅 Nast Traveler survey聽 in the United States (after Newark, N.J.) for the second year in a row?

鈥淏ecause they have never spent time here,鈥?wrote Lynn Lewis, one of many SFGate readers who responded in defense of the Other City by the Bay. 聽鈥滳鈥檓on, how many Cond茅 Nast subscribers actually visit Oakland for pleasure? The city鈥檚 reputation 鈥?especially outside Christian Louboutin Shoes Sale the Bay Area 鈥?is significantly outdated. It is an easy, if undeserving, target.鈥?

鈥淥akland is a hidden treasure and a well-kept secret,鈥?commented聽Amy Chung. 鈥淭he misconception comes from paranoia and lack of familiarity. Bad PR in the media is the main culprit. Every urban center has 鈥榖ad areas鈥?where high crime reigns, not just Oakland. Go to Rockridge, Jack London Square, Uptown, First Fridays, Montclair Village, Grand Lake, Chinatown 鈥?all friendly and fun!鈥?

Sacramento resident Jim R., who responded to the post via e-mail, said he grew up in Oakland off Joaquin Miller Road and 聽still visits once a month. Grizzly Peak, Rockridge, Powell Street in nearby Emeryville, the Paramount Theatre and A鈥檚 games are part of what draws him back. (See the photogallery above for other visitor-friendly attractions cited by commenters on SFGate and Facebook and via e-mail.)聽

But he also had a theory on why his hometown may suffer in traveler polls:聽鈥漁akland has more to offer than most cities in the U.S.A., but it鈥檚 a serve-yourself city. You have to go see stuff yourself and the locals don鈥檛 reach out much.鈥?Jim R.鈥檚 e-mail continued:

People don鈥檛 reach out to others because of the stress of life in the Bay 聽Area (costs, crowds, crime) and they keep to themselves. It didn鈥檛 used to be that way before, say, the 1990s. When you get robbed right on the sidewalk for having your smartphone out, people tend to withdraw a bit towards others. Also, other areas of the nation like the Midwest are known for how outwardly friendly they are to others, even strangers. To someone from a 鈥淏oy Howdy鈥?hometown, coming to a big impersonal metropolis like S.F. or N.Y.C. or Chicago is going to always seem harsh and unfriendly 鈥?we just are not like that 鈥?dude. Also, rich travelers who are used to being catered to at home get a dose of the ugly masses on vacation, and 聽that colors their perception.

鈥狧owever, Marilyn Jones Armstrong聽called the survey results simply 鈥渁bsurd,鈥?noting, 聽鈥滻 was an outsider and found most locals friendly and helpful. Grand Lake Farmers Market should be on that list of friendly things to do, and I miss all the street fairs.鈥澛燫uben Reyes聽also chimed in, 鈥淚 love Oakland. I live here and there are great areas 聽鈥?聽 really nice areas like Emeryville, Rockridge, Piedmont, Montclair. You enjoy the good with the bad; (it鈥檚) all part of the package.鈥?

鈥淚 used to live in Oakland for a bit and my wife and I go back regularly,鈥?wrote聽Brian Timothy Weingartner. 鈥淲hile some bad stuff goes down there, I鈥檝e never felt threatened, and in fact have more random people walking past saying 鈥榟i鈥?to me than any other place I鈥檝e been. So from my experience, it鈥檚 one of the most friendly cities in the world!鈥?

鈥狹ichelle Dione聽echoed the sentiments of a number of commenters when she wrote, perhaps only half-jokingly, gucci outlet 鈥淎s someone who lives here, I don鈥檛 even want tourists here! Lol.鈥?She continued:

Maybe that鈥檚 because I shop locally in Oakland and every service and shopping experience I have from local shops is Christian Louboutin Sale excellent. They go above and beyond to understand product, (to provide) service and to make you happy. Also walking around the lake and knowing my neighbors 鈥?the pride that people in Oaklamd have for their city is not something I see anywhere else. I guess it depends on if you come here being rude. though: We will tell you about yourself and maybe that makes us seem rude, but we don鈥檛 take crap. I鈥檝e lived in other cities and neighbors won鈥檛 even talk to you. In Oakland, if you鈥檙e polite to your neighbors, they smile at you every day after that. It鈥檚 all about having manners, some have it and some don鈥檛. Considering Oakland gets a lot of new people cycling in and out, the manners can be ever changing with them, but those who stay a long time know how to act.

While numerous other readers had pointed criticism of Oakland to share 鈥?citing high crime rates, graffiti and rude drivers on AC Transit, to name a few 鈥?many called out other cities as notably more unfriendly than Oakland. In the Bay Area, Castro Valley, Antioch, the entire Peninsula and, of course, Oakland鈥檚 longtime rival, San Francisco, drew negative 聽comments, as did several major cities on the East Coast and in Southern California. And at last check, no one had spoken up for Newark, N.J.聽Check out the photogallery below for some of the cities SFGate readers consider less friendly than Oakland, and a few of their reasons why.
