Since then, he has worked with Doctors Without Borders on more than a dozen international missions in places such as Libya while rebels were fighting with the government forces of ruler Moammar Gadhafi. He spent about six weeks this spring in South Sudan, where a civil war rages.Doctors Without Borders, also known by its French name Medecins Sans Frontieres, was created in 1971 by French physicians and journalists to help after a war and famine in Biafra, Nigeria and floods in Bangladesh. It's spread to dozens of countries experiencing war, epidemics and natural disasters. In 1999 the organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.Earlier, Sinclair had been a mountain climber, scaling Everest in 1993 and attempting other major peaks. During those expeditions, he had to contend with challenges including frostbite, oxygen deprivation and the risk of fatal falls. The traits he needed for such adventures have held him in good stead, while living and operating in impoverished war zones. Both require resourcefulness and the ability to deal with risk, discomfort and weather extremes. Phyllis says I have a climber's memory, Sinclair says, chuckling. One of the quotes in the book is from <British>mountaineer] Chris Bonington. He says, 'To be a good climber you have to have this and that and that, but the one thing you Womens Gucci Sunglasses really need is a short memory.' In some of his work abroad, Sinclair has had to operate without tools he took for granted, such as an X-ray machine and a blood bank for transfusions. I saw gruesome things, a gunshot wound blowing off the whole side of the face of an 8-year-old kid, Sinclair says. It's hard to tell a father he's going to die from this, we don't have anything to do. We can feed him with a feeding tube in the stomach but that's really all we can do. And here there's all this maxillofacial reconstructive surgery, and we had nothing like that to offer. Lack of good roads and infrastructure in the South Sudan also hampered efforts to treat the sick and wounded. The gunshot wound patients, we rarely saw them before four days after the injury so it was sort of triage, Sinclair says. Usually by the time they arrived at the hospital, infections had set in. One patient I saw with a gunshot wound was paraplegic, paralyzed from the waist down, Sinclair says. His comrades carried him. It was a week walking to get to the hospital. The work has made him feel lucky to have been born American. In a previous trip to South Sudan, I treated some people with crocodile bites and a couple of kids who had been attacked by lions, Sinclair says. One kid was dragged out of his mud hut by a lion. That kind of stuff is hard to fathom. Think about it, people are part of the food chain. Sinclair says he never has felt more camaraderie among a medical staff than he feels with the international doctors and nurses he works with abroad. You meet some pretty amazing people, Sinclair says. He's worked with True Religion Jean Skirt medical and support staff from countries such as Holland, Italy, Afghanistan, Germany, Japan, Colombia and the Congo. They are willing to put up with inconveniences and discomfort for what they think is good, he says. Nobody ever says, 'It's not my job.' Contributors to Doctors Without Borders need not fear that the nonprofit's fundraisers and administrators are living high on the hog with their donations, he says. More than 87 percent of the group's revenue goes to the programs, with the rest going toward management and fundraising. In his memoir, Sinclair tells of being in over his head on his first mission with Doctors Without Borders in Nigeria. He was expected to do orthopedic surgery, which he hadn't done in decades. He admitted to the head of the mission that he didn't have the skills. She brought in a retired Austrian orthopedic surgeon to work with Sinclair. In addition to tutoring me in orthopedics, he cheerfully helped me in general surgical operations, Sinclair wrote in his memoir. Once, we removed a ruptured spleen from a boy who had been struck by a car. As we were completing the operation, he smiled at me over his surgical mask and said, 'We just saved a life. This is a very good thing we are doing. We are not just two useless old men.' And that, Sinclair says, is what keeps him going back.On this last trip, he recalls his medical team working desperately to save the arms Gucci Outlet of two children who had been bitten by snakes. The first kid I saw with a snake bite, there was already gangrene in the arm because it took them two weeks to get to the hospital, he says. I had to amputate his arm just below the elbow. The second one came from a village nearby and I saw him within 24 hours and we operated on him and we saved his arm. For me it's still gratifying enough, Sinclair says. If I can save this little boy's arm, it's worth the trip. Margie Peterson is a freelance writer.Mike Hirsch, Entertainment/Lifestyle Editor, 610-820-6562 Copyright 2014,
