(Sports Out West Alec Martinez and the Stanley Cup)
(Will Romo bounce back- What the data says.)

Can anyone doubt that Los Angeles Kings defenseman Alec Martinez earned his Day with the Cup? After all, he scored the game winning goal both in the Conference Finals and the actual Stanley Cup Finals both in overtime, by the way.
+
A couple notes: the cut-off for a QBR drop that I considered significant was a drop of around 20 points. Some QBs barely missed the Gucci Factory Outlet cut-offs (see Roethlisberger), but I decided to include them anyways. Also, Rodgers obviously didn't have a "bad" game week 1, but he did drop his QBR by ~30 points, so I decided to include him as well.

Let s start by reliving those two goals.

Let's Take a Closer Look.

For (yet another) Kate Spade Outlet Seattle Game 7, the LA Kings faced the defending Stanley Cup champs, the Chicago Blackhawks. Not only was it the Kings third Game 7 of the playoffs, the game went into overtime.

This is actually the most disheartening statistic. What this really means is that Romo will probably have a significantly worse season this year, judging by his performance in the first game. None of the QBs who had a significant drop in their first game was able to even get close to their previous year's performance (at least in terms of QBR).
−
The score was 4-4. Even though Los Angeles are puck-possession, well, kings, these were the reigning champs. Play went back and forth. Then, a quarter of the way through overtime, play entered the Blackhawks zone. The puck came to Martinez, and he lobbed it toward Chicago goalie Corey Crawford.

No QB had a drop as drastic as Romo did

It went in. It bounced off defenseman Nick Leddy and careened past Crawford. Crawford slumped. The crowd in Chicago s United Center growled in disappointment. No matter, third-line defenseman Alec Martinez had .

This kind of builds on the previous point, but Romo had a drop of -35.9 points. In our group of QBs only Rodgers gets close to that, and he was playing with a completely ridiculous 122.5 QBR the previous year. What this means is that the Romo we know and love could be a lot worse than we had hoped this year, maybe one of the worst years yet. This does not bode well for the team. However...

Surely it was a fluke, right? This was no superstar Drew Doughty. This was Alec Martinez, a player with some of the lowest minutes on the team.

Out of all the teams with QBs that we able to stay above 80 QBR, only the and had a losing record

It was no fluke. The Kings didn t take it to seven games with the New York Rangers at a certain point even the Energizer Bunny Kings get weary. They solved the Rangers in five.

Okay, now we're talking blue kool-aid. Yeah, yeah I know correlation, causation whatever, but the fact remains there's some knowledge to be gained here. This is actually the main reason why Gucci Loafers Men I think the might not be so bad this year. Looking at the teams that ended badly: Redskins are always a shaky team, especially in these past few years with RG3's knee and all. The Saints in 2012 had a horrible defense that gave up the most yards and second most points. I really doubt Romo's supporting cast this year could be as bad as those two teams. So there's still a little bit of hope for our Cowboys, especially since the 2013 won their division 12-4. Bad news is, none of the teams who had QBs below 80 QBR made it to playoffs.
−
And Alec Martinez , future Hall of Famer Henrik Lundqvist.
+
Good QBs...stay good
−
To Lundqvist s credit, he was a superb goalie that night. He made 48 saves 32 of them from the third period on. No, you can t lay the blame at Lundqvist s feet.
+
Again going off the previous point, all 3 of the "elite" (ugh) Quarterbacks who laid an egg their first game still managed a pretty good QBR at the end of the year. Brady, Brees, and Rodgers each were above 87 QBR that year, and also still created a situation for their team to at least have a shot at a winning record. (Though Authentic Gucci Sneakers we already discussed why Brees's 2012 team did not make it) I chose to think Romo is closer to Brees and Brady than he is to RGIII and Michael Vick, so there is reason to think Romo will bounce back better than expected.
−
You can lay it at Martinez s feet, though. The game didn t just go into overtime, it went into double overtime.
+
Conclusion
−
Late in the second overtime, Kings goalie Jonathan Quick made a key save. Play moved up the ice, a 3-on-2, and Martinez was part of the action. Kings forward Tyler Toffoli he of the Whoo-hoo to his father on live TV shot the puck. Lundqvist made the save, but the rebound came Tory Burch Cape right to Martinez s stick.聽 Lundqvist was on the far side of the net, leaving wide open space for Martinez.
+
Okay, so the prognosis isn't too great. Romo is all but certain to decline this year, and very few teams with a QB that has declined make it to playoffs. There is still a little bit of hope, as evidenced by both Rodgers and Brady, if Romo can at least maintain a respectable QBR and the defense maintains its performance from week 1, we could end up with a team that is at least vying for a wildcard spot. If not, however, we could be in for a pretty rough year.

And he buried it in. The crowd at the LA Staples Center went delirious. Martinez went delirious he lost a few seconds:

I blacked out. I tossed my gear, the guys jumped in, and I couldn鈥檛 breathe for a while. It鈥檚 a surreal moment.

Surreal or not, thanks to Alec Martinez s overtime goal, the Kings had won the Stanley Cup.

Alec Martinez s Day With the Cup
+
−
Alec Martinez is the last amongst players and coaches to receive his Day with the Cup. No reason why everyone else got to go before him maybe they saved the best for last. Indeed, the Cup will visit vice president and Kings legend Luc Robitaille absolute last.

In any case, Martinez received the Stanley Cup around 10:30 am on Monday, August 25, at his home in Allen, Texas. According to and the player s own tweets, he and a group of family and friends had lunch at a nearby driving range NHL players do love their golf in the off-season. Later he held a Stanley Cup party at his newly-purchased home, then everyone went out for dinner at an area restaurant. At some point in all the festivities Martinez filled the Cup with Fruit Loops. And that was Martinez s chill Day with the Cup.

One question going into the 2014-15 season is how big a role Martinez will take Kate Spade Outlet Leesburg on with the Kings. Even before his playoff heroics, he had started becoming a valuable asset on the LA blueline. Come training camp time, Alec Martinez could very well prove worthy of top-4 playing time. And that will give the LA Kings a formidable defensive corps indeed.
+
−
Regardless, will always be remembered as the quiet defenseman who proved to be the clutchiest of all clutch players.
