Zinc mining waste cleanup in Upper Saucon nearly completeEastern Industries, which holds the mining permit for the Lehigh University land and is responsible for its remediation, is close to finishing the job, state regulators say.August 04, 2014|By Scott Kraus, Of The Morning CallWhen Lehigh University came into a windfall of land donated to the school in 2012 by the Donald B. and Dorothy Stabler Foundation, it came with one piece of baggage.A chunk of the 755 acres of donated property included contaminated limestone tailings a form of zinc mining waste that the state insisted had to be cleaned up before that portion could be developed.Nearly two years later, Eastern Industries, the local company that holds the mining permit for the land and is responsible for its remediation, is close to finishing the job, state regulators say. It has stabilized the property, layered clean soil and rock over the zinc piles and seeded the newly-graded property to stabilize it.Now Louis Vuitton Speedy Round the company just needs to grow some grass."This was an agreed-upon remedy, provided the vegetation takes," said Colleen Connolly, spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Protection. "DEP will inspect to see if the planting and seeding is satisfactory at the site. Eastern Industries just has to make sure the vegetation progresses."DEP and Lehigh County Conservation District inspectors visited the site in June to inspect the work, she said."It is a process DEP required, and we have been following their protocol," said Rusty Taft, Eastern's land permit and environmental manager. The cleanup was designed to prevent dust emanating from the mining waste, which includes zinc and arsenic, from being caught up and dispersed in the wind.State officials had initially given the company until the end of August 2013 to complete the regrading, and the end of September 2013 to grow the grass.Last year, Connolly said, dust from the piles was not blowing off the 139-acre former mine site, and it was not a public health threat.Taft said the site needed some "additional maintenance" before that work could be completed, pushing it into 2014.The cleanup is part of the process of closing out the mining permit, which will pave the way for the eventual development of the land.Former Lehigh University President Alice Gast told the Upper Saucon Township supervisors last year that the university hopes to sell or lease 300 acres of property for development. The land is near Route 309, Interstate 78 and Center Valley Parkway north of the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley.Medical device maker B. Braun has already announced plans to build a new U.S. corporate headquarters on one parcel in that area.Lehigh has established a separate entity LU Properties LLC to plan for the long-term use of the donated property.University spokesman Jordan Reese said Lehigh is encouraged by Eastern Industries' cleanup efforts."As the parcel of Stabler land closest to Lehigh's existing campuses, Lehigh's long-term plan for the property is mission-focused, meaning it makes the most sense for future academic use," he said. "We are working on a strategic plan for the property that will involve input and ideas from campus."Testing performed in July 2012 showed soil samples from all 20 locations in the limestone piles on the contaminated parcel to the east of the Promenade Shops contained levels of arsenic that exceeded certain statewide health standards.Zinc was detected at levels exceeding state guidelines in one sample taken in the limestone piles.Complaints from one resident about dust escaping the site prompted an investigation that determined that two of the berms that contain the limestone had crumbled, exposing the piles to wind. The berms were to be repaired as part of the reclamation project, Connolly said.If the site is developed, the builder will have to work with DEP to safely address the arsenic contained in the zinc mining waste.Twitter @skraus610-820-6745Featured ArticlesMore:Related Articles
August 15, 2013
August 12, 2013
November 14, 2012
May 7, 2012
May 11, 2012Find More Stories About|||Please note the green-lined linked article text has been applied commercially without any involvement from our newsroom editors, reporters or any other editorial staff.
