It is the third movie from the British director Steve McQueen, who is famous for his gruelling depictions of extreme human states in his films Hunger (in which Michael Fassbender lost three stone to play the Irish republican dissident Bobby Sands), and Shame, about a sex addict (again played by Fassbender). Both Hunger and Shame wowed art house audiences but proved too defiantly difficult for America audiences to love. ‘Intense’ is how Ejiofor describes the experience of making 12 Years a Slave. ‘When you go to that place,’ he says, ‘you’re not sure you’re ever going to come back.’ | |
