That鈥檚 because Green Bay decided to try and attack the Seahawks elsewhere on the field and didn鈥檛 target Sherman once.

Seattle鈥檚 defensive scheme has its cornerbacks line up on one side and stay there for the whole game, rather than follow an individual receiver. Sherman lined up on the left side of the field for the entire game and  didn鈥檛 attempt to test him once.

While the Packers were probably unwise to eliminate an entire side of the field from their passing gameplan, their line of thinking is easy to follow. Green Bay could send a target like  over the left side, creating a matchup of No. 1 wide receiver  against Seattle鈥檚 No. 2 corner, .

It obviously didn鈥檛 work, as Rodgers was held to just 189 yards and couldn鈥檛 get anything going down the field. Sherman may not have defended a pass, but his impact on the game was undeniably huge and he helped make everybody else on the defense better.
2. Ryan Palmer, United States

Instead of thinking about individual matchups, the Seahawks鈥?defense thinks about space. Not only will Sherman neutralize a player, he will completely eliminate about one-third of the field.

With less space to worry about, the entire defense can get better. Ballhawk safety  can already cover enough ground and Sherman locking down one side of the field frees Thomas up to make more plays.

and  can also fly to the ball all over the field and don鈥檛 tend to miss tackles. With Sherman in control of a third of the field and speedy linebackers and safeties, it鈥檚 going to be very difficult for opposing offenses to create big plays against the Seahawks.

Sherman taking away any possible target on an entire side of the field will also help Seattle鈥檚 pass rush. With fewer options, quarterbacks may have to hold on to the ball longer, and Seattle has proven it can effectively rush the passer without resorting to blitzing.

Seattle s pass rush was fairly quiet to start the game, but took over in the second half True Religion Hoodies with a key sack on fourth down and later forced a safety. For all this to work, the Seahawks need a strong No. 2 cornerback. Maxwell arguably looked better than  after taking over the starting job last season and will now have to sustain that success over the course of an entire season.

While it might make some sense for Sherman to follow the No. 1 receiver, the strategy has worked well so far. It鈥檚 not foolproof 鈥? and the Indianapolis Colts figured out a way to beat the Seahawks secondary last season 鈥?but it鈥檚 been effective against some of the best offenses in the NFL on a fairly consistent basis.
