The truth is that Maine s economy has shown a mix of successes and setbacks, giving candidates plenty to cheer 鈥?or complain about鈥?in the state s hotly contested three-way gubernatorial race.

When Manager Billy McMillon finished his end-of-the-season address to his Portland Sea Dogs, the hugs began. McMillon, pitching coach Bob Kipper and hitting coach Rich Gedman made their rounds, congratulating players and saying farewells.
It s obvious to anyone who drives around the state of Maine that we are on our knees, said independent candidate Eliot Cutler, who s challenging LePage in the race with Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud.
+
Then the players approached each other. More hugs.
LePage s campaign frequently highlights Maine s declining unemployment rate, which has dropped more than 25 percent since he took over in January 2011. At 5.5 percent, it s at its lowest point in nearly six years and below the national average.
+
Catcher Michael Brenly, always one to lighten the mood, joked that the sentimentality was getting out of hand.
LePage contends that his efforts to cut taxes and red tape have helped Maine s economy make great strides and that his administration s welfare-to-work programs are Christian Louboutin Shoes Sale helping people find jobs.
+
What started almost seven months ago in the heat of Florida spring training, ended on a comfortable September afternoon in Portland, with an 8-5 loss in the Eastern League playoffs.
Maine is better off today than it was four years ago and our actions can back it up, he said in his weekly radio address.

There Christian Louboutin Heels were plenty of accomplishments, including a franchise-best regular-season record of 88-54, and 14 players promoted to the next level (including two who received the news after Sunday s game).
But while the national economy recently recovered all the nearly 9 million jobs lost during the Great Recession, Maine has regained only about two-thirds of the roughly 30,000 jobs it shed during the downturn.
+
But McMillon witnessed more than the tangible.
Meanwhile, federal statistics last month showed that Maine s economy grew by just 3 percent from the second quarter of 2009 until the end of 2013, tying with Connecticut for the slowest growth in New England.

I addition to those guys being promoted, I think some of them got a better sense how to be a teammate, how to root for your teammates, how to start thinking about doing the little things that help ballclubs win, McMillon said.
Despite Christian Louboutin Outlet Online what we re hearing from the governor s office, we still have a long way to go before the labor market is close to as healthy as it was before the recession, said Joel Johnson, an economist with the liberal-leaning Maine Center for Economic Policy.
+
The fact that some of these guys learned those lessons here, it s going to help them when they get to (Triple-A) Pawtucket, when they get to Boston or any other major league club.
Yet, experts say the state of Maine s economy has little to do with who s been in the Blaine House. Economists in Maine 鈥?which has the oldest population in the country 鈥?have known for years that job growth would slow because thousands of people are retiring and leaving the workforce, said Glenn Mills, chief economist for the Maine Department of Labor s Center for Workforce Research and Information.
+
Second baseman Sean Coyle might have been one of those promoted, had he not missed 45 games because of injuries during the season. Coyle batted .295 with an .883 OPS and a team-leading 16 home runs.
That s also hurt other economic indicators, such as personal income growth, because retired people generally earn less than those who work, Mills said. Recent federal figures showed that Maine s personal income growth rate was among the nation s smallest.
+
He also missed the final playoff game because of another injury 鈥?a badly-bruised left wrist, the result of being hit by a pitch Saturday.
Others disagree that the aging population is to blame.
+
It was tough to miss the last michael kors sale game, Coyle said. Pretty tough to watch them 鈥?but I proudly watched them. This team doesn t give up.
Bigger factors have been federal economic decisions and the fact that the areas in which Maine is highly specialized 鈥?such as forest products and construction 鈥?are coming out of the recession more slowly than other industries, said Charles Colgan, a former state economist and current professor Louboutin Shoes UK at the University of Southern Maine.
+
It s what Billy talked about in our closing meeting. We didn t give up. That s how we ve been all year and that s how we were today. A proud effort by the guys.
But that won t stop the finger-pointing.
+
Behind 8-1, the Sea Dogs scored one in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth.
In his radio address, LePage criticized decades of progressive tax-and-spend policies for hindering Maine s recovery. He said in an interview that Maine can t seriously turn its economy around if it doesn t address the high cost of energy.
+
Part of who we are as the Sea Dogs, being down 8-1 and fighting back, reliever Robby Scott said. There wasn t a doubt in anyone s mind that this team could do it.
If Cutler and Michaud don t want to talk about lowering the cost of energy, they re going to be a bigger failure than they think I am, he said.
+
It didn t happen but we sure as heck kept fighting.
Cutler said LePage has failed to come up with a plan to make Maine successful in the 21st century.
+
But the Binghamton Mets bullpen shut down the Sea Dogs in the final three innings. Hadlock fans applauded the effort and the players slowly walked toward the clubhouse, some turning to wave to the crowd.
Democrats, meanwhile, blame LePage s decisions 鈥?such as not expanding Medicaid under the federal health care law 鈥?for stifling job growth.
+
Soon, they sat in front of their lockers, listening to McMillon one last time.
The governor can say what he wants, but things are not good in the state of Maine, Michaud said. The bottom line is that a lot of voters that I talk to, they are struggling.
+
He just said to keep our heads high. We had an incredible run throughout the year, Scott said.
+
Scott is another one who could have Christian Louboutin Shoes Sale been promoted to Pawtucket after a breakout season (8-2, 1.96 ERA).
+
Three more experienced relievers were promoted before him. But Scott is on the Red Sox radar and will be in the prospect-filled Arizona Fall League next month.

Just one of many good players to wear a Sea Dogs uniform in 2014.
