TEMPLE (September 8, 2014) Doctors at McLane Children's Hospital in Temple Monday said they鈥檙e monitoring a jump in the number of patients with respiratory illnesses, but say the strain here is not as severe as a severe virus that has sickened hundreds of children in about a dozen states in the Midwest.
The new order is at least the second time Meyer, who has divided the plaintiffs into three trial groups, has agreed to postpone trial dates.

The hospital received more than 100 reports of children with respiratory issues last week.
About 200 plaintiffs, including families of those killed and injured, the city of West, West Rest Haven nursing home and West Terrace Apartments, have filed lawsuits in the wake of the April 17, 2013, West Fertilizer Co. explosion.

In a joint motion filed last week asking the judge to amend his case-management orders, the parties said the extension of deadlines primarily is to provide additional time for the designation of expert witnesses.

The order also pushes back deadlines by 49 days for the parties to continue taking depositions and other trial preparation deadlines.

Besides suing Adair Chemical Co., the local owners of the plant, plaintiffs have named Gucci Belts Sale as defendants El Dorado Chemical Co., CF Industries, Thermaclime Inc. and International Chemical Co. The defendants either manufactured or sold fertilizer to West Fertilizer Co.

El Dorado and CF Industries contend the city was negligent because it failed to properly train the first responders and had insufficient protocols in place to battle the blaze at West Fertilizer that triggered the explosion.

Seton Medical Center in Harker Heights has also noted an increase in similar cases in the last couple of weeks.
A motion from CF Industries also seeks to designate as a responsible party an unknown 鈥淛ohn Doe,鈥?who the motion Cheap Gucci Sale said may have started the fire, and the makers of a golf cart, which was inside West Fertilizer and may have caused the fire through a potential electrical short, the State Fire Marshal鈥檚 Office has said.

The suspected culprit in the Midwest, where nearly 500 children were treated at one hospital alone in Kansas City, Mo., is called enterovirus 68, an uncommon strain of a very common family of viruses that typically hit from summertime through the fall.
A motion from El Dorado also alleges that the city should be named as a responsible third party because it failed to protect its citizens by allowing through its zoning authority schools and a nursing home to operate in a close proximity to the plant.

The virus typically causes illness lasting about a week and most children recover with no lasting problems.
