MILWAUKEE (WITI) A respiratory virus has sent hundreds of children to hospitals, and it s causing alarm across the Midwest and beyond. Ten states have contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for help investigating clusters of the virus that鈥檚 being blamed for the illness.

MILWAUKEE (WITI) Bill Scholl, director of intercollegiate athletics at Ball State University, will serve as Marquette University鈥檚 next vice president and director of athletics, President Michael R. Lovell announced on Tuesday, September 9th.
Health officials say they鈥檙e still working to figure out what鈥檚 going on.
+
Scholl has more than two decades of athletics administration experience and oversaw 19 NCAA Division I athletic programs at Ball State. He will begin at Marquette mid-October.
The bug that appears to be causing most of the concern has a typically arcane name 鈥?Enterovirus EV-D68 鈥?but many of its symptoms are very common.
+
Scholl, who will report directly to President Lovell, takes over an athletic department with new leaders directing its signature programs, men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball. Steve Wojciechowski was named the head coach of the men鈥檚 Gucci Sukey Tote basketball program on April 1, and Carolyn Kieger was named the head women鈥檚 basketball coach a month later. 鈥淏ill鈥檚 experience is the perfect complement to our young and energetic head coaches,鈥?President Lovell said.
Enteroviruses, which bring on symptoms like a very intense cold, aren鈥檛 unusual. They鈥檙e actually very common.

Past successes and service
When you have a bad summer cold, often what you have is an enterovirus, said Mark Pallansch, a virologist and director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention鈥檚 Division of Viral Diseases.
+
Scholl has led the Ball State Cardinals since 2012, during which eight programs have reached the postseason and 13 teams placed either first or second in the Mid-American Conference. Ball State has boasted four All-Americans in each of his two years and the Cardinals placed 54 student-athletes on all-conference teams in 2013-14, a 14.9-percent increase over Scholl鈥檚 first year and a 54.3-percent increase over the year before his arrival.
There are more than 100 types of enteroviruses causing about 10 to 15 million infections in the United States each year, according to the CDC. They are carried in the intestinal tract and often spread to other parts of the body.
+
In his time at Ball State, he also served as chairperson of the Mid-American Conference鈥檚 basketball issues working group and was a member of the conference鈥檚 finance committee. He oversaw a number of on-campus facility upgrades including the renovation of baseball and softball stadiums and the groundbreaking for a new football facility for team meetings and office space.
The season often hits its peak in September, as summer ends and fall begins.
+
Under Scholl鈥檚 leadership at Ball State, student-athletes also saw success in Cheap Gucci Handbags the classroom, with 14 teams scoring better than the national Division I average in the NCAA鈥檚 Academic Progress Report baseline. The men鈥檚 basketball team climbed in its academic standing steadily, posting a 2013 score that is 20 points higher than the national average.
So why all the concern now?聽What鈥檚 unusual at the moment is the high number of hospitalizations.
+
Prior to his term at Ball State, Scholl served 23 years at Notre Dame, where he finished as deputy athletics director. He was responsible for administration of men鈥檚 basketball, football, baseball and men鈥檚 soccer, as well as fundraising and donor relations, budgeting and growing external revenue. Scholl collaborated with the university鈥檚 advancement office to lead the athletics department in an $84 million athletics fundraising initiative for the Spirit of Notre Dame campaign.
There aren t any cases in Wisconsin currently, Gucci Eyeglass but there s concern we could see cases here in the near future.
+
Early in his career, Scholl held leadership positions in service-driven organizations. He was the former director of financial Gucci Sunglasses Cheap development for the 1987 International Summer Special Olympic Games. He served in the same position for one year at South Bend鈥檚 Logan Center, which offers services to persons with developmental disabilities. While working for Special Olympics, he raised in excess of $8 million for the 1987 games.
In Colorado, nearly 900 children were treated for the illness, but the good news is that it s not typically deadly.
+
Scholl earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in American studies in 1979 from Notre Dame. He and his wife, Julie, have three children: Michael (a 2009 Notre Dame graduate), Stefanie (a 2012 Ball State graduate) and Kelly (a 2014 Notre Dame graduate).
It can be severe in the asthmatic and the allergy kids population, Dr. Angela Tonozzi, the Director of Infection Prevention at Aurora Healthcare said.
+

Dr. Tonozzi says while there are no cases in Wisconsin currently, doctors here are prepared.
+
This is viral respiratory season, so we prepare for Enterovirus as we do every late summer/early fall, Dr. Tonozzi said.
+
An Gucci Outlet Store analysis by the CDC showed at least 30 Kansas City children tested positive for EV-D68, Missouri health officials said.
+
It鈥檚 a type of enterovirus that鈥檚 uncommon, but not new.
+
It was first identified in the 1960s and there have been fewer than 100 reported cases since that time. But it鈥檚 possible that the relatively low number of reports might be because EV-D68 is hard to identify.
+
EV-D68 was seen last year in the United States and this year in various parts of the world. Over the years, clusters have been reported in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arizona and various countries including the Philippines, Japan and the Netherlands.
+
The virus can start as just a cold. Signs include coughing, difficulty breathing and in some cases a rash. Sometimes they can be accompanied by fever or wheezing.
+
Respiratory problems appear to the hallmark of EV-D68, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
+
鈥淢ost enteroviruses cause either a little bit of a cold or a diarrheal illness 鈥?a few cause meningitis,鈥?said William Schaffner, head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt University. 鈥淭his one is the, if you will, odd cousin. It causes prominent respiratory symptoms. Why it does that, we鈥檙e really not sure.鈥?
+
Pay attention to the symptoms that your child is having. If they`re having wheezing for the first time that`s a definite symptom you need to go and seek care for or if they`re having wheezing that just won`t go away. If you re having difficulty breathing, you might need some oxygen. You might need some fluids if you get dehydrated and just specialized care and monitoring, Dr. Tonozzi said.
+
Like other enteroviruses, the respiratory illness appears to spread through close contact with infected people. That makes children more susceptible.
+
There鈥檚 not a Gucci Men Belt great deal you can do, health officials say, beyond taking commonsense steps to reduce the risk.
+
Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds 鈥?particularly after going to the bathroom and changing diapers.
+
Clean and disinfect surfaces that are regularly touched by different people, such as toys and doorknobs.
+
Avoid shaking hands, kissing, hugging and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick. And stay home if you feel unwell.
+
There鈥檚 no vaccine for EV-D68.
