The Ondo State government said, on Thursday, in Akure, the state capital, that it  would  collaborate with international agencies  in the  provision of potable water .

The Chairman,  Ondo State Water Corporation, Mr Steve Giwa, told  newsmen that the state government was ready to work with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources in implementing its water policy and law.

鈥淎s I speak with you now, Ondo State does not have the presence of  the World Bank or any international agency with regards to projects  on potable water.

鈥淭he reason for this is that there is no existing water policy and law which are  the prerequisites.

鈥?But the state government is working with Federal Ministry of Water Resources on how we can have our own water policy and law which would be in place in the first quarter of 2015,鈥?he said.

Giwa  said that the state government had embarked on  rehabilitation  and upgrading of various water schemes  to meet the current needs of residents.

鈥淚n Akoko Zone, we have rehabilitated and upgraded Awara dam and it is functioning now with Igbaraoke Multipurpose Dam.

鈥淚gbobini Dam is also completed,  while  Oba-Akoko Dam  is at  test-running stage,鈥?he said.

He,  however,  stressed that the water treatment plant at Ose/Ifon,  which cost N100 million,  had been  vandalised.

The chairman appealed to the  private sector to partner with the state government, saying government alone could not meet the yearnings  of  water users.

鈥淲ater supply is capital intensive and if it is left  to government alone, it means it has to abandon other vital sectors.

鈥淭herefore, government is encouraging public private partnership in the sector  as this  is a good venture  given that water is  essential to human existence,鈥?he said.
