@@@ A new protected bike lane on Second Avenue in downtown Seattle has opened, but not everyone is impressed with the design.

The two-way bike lane runs from Pike Street to Yesler Way and is separated from cars on the road by a series of reflective posts. Along with the new lanes, new traffic lights have been installed on the left side of the road with signals for bikes and cars. With different signals for cars, bicycles and pedestrians, Monson is confident there is going to be a great deal of confusion. The city is hoping the new lane will improve safety and comfort for bike riders, and cut down on accidents, like the one two weeks ago that killed a cyclist on Second Avenue. The Seattle Department of Transportation says 61 bike related collisions have been reported on Second Avenue between Pine and Jackson on Second Avenue over the past four and a half years. Fifty percent involved left hand turns, including the recent fatal collision. "Second Avenue's improved design will work better for pedestrians, bikes, automobiles and transit," says Mayor Ed Murray. But Monson is not confident they will see the results they are looking for. "This is going to lead to accidents," he says. Last week, for the death of Seattle attorney Sher Kung. "She became a victim of insane bike lane designs on the streets of Seattle," said Monson, explaining the old design meant drivers were turning left across the bike lane. "Somebody else is going to be killed because of this design," says Monson. "I've seen stupid things in my life, but Seattle continues to try to top itself."
