They are part of the Southern California guild, which has seen its numbers grow from nine when the guild was started in 1997 to about 90 this year, said guild President Pat Mark, based in Rancho Cucamonga.Daly, an Irvine-based graphic designer by trade, chose to illustrate red bird of paradise (Caesalpinia pulcherrima), powderpuff or fairy duster (Calliandra haematocephala) and the Hong Kong orchid tree (Bauhinia blakeana), all of which have festive flowers with vivid hues.Working on one watercolor on paper at a time, she clips a branch of the plant, puts it in water in a vase, and observes it, noting the various colors, shapes, the natural form of the plant, the various parts and the exact numbers of things such as the quantity of pods or the layers of petals. Unlike other types of art in which a painter may take creative license in depicting plants, botanical art and illustration aims for as much scientific accuracy as possible, Daly said. 鈥淚 like the details,鈥?she said. 鈥淚 find that it鈥檚 the most challenging thing but it also gives the most satisfaction.鈥滷or Josephs, of Tustin, the most interesting subjects for botanical art are those that convey the relationship of flora with fauna. That鈥檚 why she chose to pair false indigo with the California dogface butterfly (Amorpha fruticosa with Zerene eurydice) in one of the illustrations for the exhibit. 鈥淚 love that part of trying to show how the plant is connected to its environment. The false indigo is a larval host for the butterfly. This means that the butterfly lays its eggs on that plant and when the eggs hatch, that plant is their food. The connection between plant and animal is wonderful to understand.鈥漌here most artists might choose classically pretty subjects, Shaw sees beauty in the quirky, unconventional and sometimes bizarre. One of her two works on display is an image of red-eyed wattle or western coastal wattle (Acacia cyclops), a watercolor and graphite (pencil) on vellum. 鈥淭he common name and the species name refer to the appearance of the seeds in the pods,鈥?she said. 鈥淓ach shiny black seed is encircled by a thick orange-red stalk, called an aril, making it resemble a bloodshot eye.鈥漁ne of the strangest-looking living things she has ever illustrated is dog turd fungus or dead man鈥檚 foot (Pisolithus tinctorius), the ugliest of all fungi. When she painted a buttercup squash (Cucurbita maxima), she included the bumps and natural imperfections.While Shaw and her colleagues take a more traditional approach that harks to the origins of botanical art as society鈥檚 scientific documentation of plants, they say the world of botanical art is evolving as other artists try other methods of depiction and redefine what constitutes botanical art.
