In a November 25 letter sent to hospitals that use the Thoratec device, the company insisted “our sustaining engineering team has regularly examined and evaluated our components and processes to maintain the highest quality standards and to identify any opportunities for improvement…These investigations have not identified a device-related or manufacturing root cause.” In a prepared statement sent to Forbes, Thoratec Chief Executive Gary Burbach insisted his team “takes every potential complication seriously” and that heart failure patients are the company’s “top priority.”
