But in Gholson, they've had a few of them the last few years.
"The past two years we've had a lot of firsts for Gholson," said offensive and defensive lineman Zachary Guthroe. Over 80 years ago there was football in Gholson, but this is a new era.
For the first time, Gholson will be a part of a UIL district and play a full varsity schedule. The process has been three years in the making since the school reopened in 2012.
"It's been a slow process, a building process, figuring out what we wanted to do as a football team and what our strategy was going to be. It was a good two year process and we hope that it works," said head coach Keith Beverly.

"It's helped a lot, especially for most of our players who haven't played before," said running back and defensive back Noah Jewell. "They got to see a lot of professional tips that come from professional players and see how it works and what to do."
