LAGOS State government has stated that the expanded economic empowerment programme currently going on in the state would have trained 25,000 residents at the end of the second phase currently ongoing across 11 centres within the state.

Making this assertion yesterday was the governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, at the kick-off of the Phase Two of the programme at Alimosho Local Government, with similar exercise held at 10 other centres simultaneously in all parts of the state.

The governor, who said the initial plan was to train 10,000 people in two phases at 20 centres, noted that the increase in the number of people who showed interest and the determination of the government to ensure equal opportunities for all necessitated the increase in number of the training centres.

Governor Fashola, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, added that since more than 11,000 benefited from the first phase, logistics had been put in place to train additional 14,000 residents in the second phase, adding that by November 7 when the second phase would end, 25,000 residents would have been empowered economically.

He noted that the reason for the economic empowerment was government鈥檚 response to the yearnings of the people on the issue of unemployment and poverty.

Earlier in her welcome address, the deputy governor, who also oversees the Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation ministry, Orelope-Adefulire, stated that the economic empowerment programme was in reaction to the challenge faced by thousands of interested residents who are unable to attend the long-term training programme held at the skills acquisition centers.
