@@@ 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know what鈥檚 going to happen, but obviously I want to play,鈥?Pierzynski said. 鈥淥ne of the reasons I came to St.Louis was to have a chance to play in these games. I鈥檒l do whatever鈥檚 needed.鈥? Lackey was the winning pitcher in the final game of the 2002 World Series, just the second rookie in history to start and win a Game7. Lackey said Monday that his main memory of pitching at then-Pacific Bell Park in Game 4 was collecting his first big-league hit. Another memory: walking intentionally 鈥?four times. 鈥淲ouldn鈥檛 you?鈥?Lackey asked. So this year鈥檚 Giants team isn鈥檛 quite as fearsome. 鈥淚 mean, no offense to anybody in their lineup, but they don鈥檛 (have) Barry Bonds,鈥?Lackey said. 鈥淭hey have got a really good lineup. It鈥檚 a deep lineup, and especially when you鈥檝e got (Travis) Ishikawa hitting eighth. 鈥?It鈥檚 more of an -style lineup, which I鈥檓 pretty well accustomed to. So I鈥檓 going to have to make pitches all the way throughout the lineup. They are good.鈥? Giants fans will recall Pierzynski鈥檚 2004 season with, at best, dismay, in large part because the team sent pitchers , and to the Twins for him, one of the worst deals in club history. Pierzynski had a decent season, but stayed just one year, and he wasn鈥檛 universally liked; some of the team鈥檚 pitchers ripped him anonymously, calling him, among other things, 鈥渁 clubhouse cancer.鈥? 鈥淚t was one of those things. It just didn鈥檛 work out,鈥?Pierzynski said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 have any resentment, and I met a lot of people I鈥檓 still friends with, but it just wasn鈥檛 a good fit. I played every day, I had a good year, we won some games. 鈥淚 have nothing against this city and the fans here. I never have. It鈥檚 a great city and they know baseball here. There were just a couple of guys on the team I had an issue with, and even those guys I鈥檝e talked to and everything鈥檚 fine now.鈥? Another subplot: Pierzynski also has some history with the Giants鈥?Game3 starter, . Hudson鈥檚 A鈥檚 teams faced Pierzynski鈥檚 Twins often in the early 2000s, and the two were the most fiery men in their respective clubhouses. Things boiled over after the Twins beat Oakland in the 2002 Division Series. The A鈥檚 thought Pierzynski taunted catcher after a home run. 鈥淢ost people aren鈥檛 too fond of him,鈥?Hudson said of Pierzynski at the time. On Tuesday, Hudson said, 鈥淕osh, that was so long ago. 鈥?A.J. is a competitor. He goes out there and he loves competing and he鈥檚 been on some teams that have had a lot of success. He鈥檚 just one of those guys that he goes out there and he competes 鈥?and does it in a way that makes you really want to beat him.鈥? Pierzynski had similar thoughts about Hudson, saying, 鈥淗e competes his tail off. He鈥檚 a fun guy to face. You know he鈥檚 going to come after you. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be fun to watch him and Lackey, because neither one of them are going to want to come out of the game. They鈥檙e both guys who want to throw 145 pitches. Neither one of them backs down.鈥?
