@@@ Towamencin police are warning residents of a telephone scam in which callers pretend to be agents with the Internal Revenue Service.

Numerous residents have reported they have received phone calls from people claiming to work for the IRS who say they owe money, Towamencin police said.

鈥淭hese scam callers will state that if the debts are not settled immediately via phone, that they will send agents and police to arrest them. Please be advised that the IRS will not call you and ask you to work out your debt over the phone,鈥?

Authorities advise residents who receive similar calls to hang up immediately. According to information from police, the IRS would never request credit card information over the phone. Additionally, it would not insist on a specific payment method or require immediate payment over the phone. Taxpayers generally receive prior notification of IRS enforcement action involving tax liens or levies, police advised.
