Top-ranked Picayune gained some payback Friday, defeating Pascagoula 24-10 to extend its winning streak to 14 games. At the same time, the 6-0 Maroon Tide took sole possession of first place in Region 4-5A. This week -- the other two unbeaten teams in the Sun Herald South Mississippi Top 10 -- St. Stanislaus (7-0) and Ocean Springs (7-0) -- face key contests as they continue their quest for a region title. Second-ranked St. Stanislaus returns home to face No. 8 Poplarville (6-1) in a game that could be pivotal in deciding the Region 8-4A championship. Two years ago, these two teams played a classic on SSC's home field as Poplarville beat SSC 82-80 -- and there was no overtime. SSC has lost only one game over the past two seasons. Third-ranked Ocean Springs also returns home to face Harrison Central (4-4), which is in the midst of a four-game losing streak. The Greyhounds are coming off a 35-21 victory at Biloxi. "Right now we are making our own breaks, and we are getting some, too, Ocean Springs coach Ryan Ross said. "I like all our running backs. They work hard every week. They know they all have their job to do and if they are patient, they will get their carries. They may break one and help the football team. "I'm proud of everybody. I think it was a good team win. Marcus Buckley made some great plays for us, and that is a credit to Drew Windham and the o-line. Everybody gets credit. Fourth-ranked D'Iberville (5-3) faces a key home game with Hancock as the Warriors try to stay in the region race, one game behind Ocean Springs, Gulfport and Hattiesburg. Fifth-ranked Gulfport, also 5-3, has a showdown with one of the Region 4-6A tri-leaders -- Hattiesburg. The Tigers have won three in a row, including a 62-20 win over St. Martin. Gulfport has also won three in a row, including a 38-14 win at Hancock last week. They game is in Hattiesburg. Two new teams crashed the rankings -- No. 8 Poplarville and No. 9 Stone (4-3).
