Fresh facts emerged sunday on the circumstances surrounding the alleged jailbreak that occurred at the Kirikiri Medium Prisons, Lagos, last Friday, even as the death toll allegedly rose to five.

This was contrary to the claims by the Prisons National Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ope Fatinikun, who said it was only one injured inmate that died from injuries sustained during the melee.
It was however unclear if the additional four were from the seven inmates of the prison who were injured and admitted in various hospitals.
But THISDAY gathered from prison sources that the inmates who died and six others who are currently hospitalised were part of the casualty after the prison officials and the military tried to restore peace in the prison.
Part of the measures to restore peace included the sporadic gunshots heard behinde the prison walls, signalling the beginning of last Friday s melee that almost resulted to a jailbreak.
The source further claimed that the inmates did not try to escape, rather, they were allegedly shot as  the officials tried to quell the riot.
According to reports, the inmates were merely protesting the alleged ban on the special privileges they had hitherto enjoyed during the tenure of the former Deputy Comptroller of Prisons (DCP).
It was gathered that the new DCP had ordered that items likes fan, generator, raw foodstuffs, cell phones, cooking utensils and other utilities be banned amongst the inmates.
But what triggered Friday s incident was when a warden tried to seize a fan belonging to one of the inmates pastoring the Freedom Chapel within the prison.
The inmates who were aggrieved by the treatment meted out on the inmate, popularly known as General Overseer , were said to have attacked the wardens, forcing them to retreat.
The situation soon snowballed and the inmates started throwing stones at the wardens breaking glasses and damaging the windscreens of cars in the process.
One of the military personnel who were deployed to help maintain peace at the prison told THISDAY that the prisons authority were allegedly economical with the truth about what actually caused the fracas and the casualty rate.
Addressing claims that the military deliberately shot at the inmates, he said nothing of such happened rather the gunshots were into air to deter the inmates from escaping.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, was sunday said to have visited the prison without the knowledge of journalists as they were only informed after he had left.
