Clearly affected by the styling the Mercedes-Benz SLK, the new Cadillac XLR shares the squared off look of other recent Cadillacs. It doesn't look bad whatsoever, although the headlamps look as if they've been squeezed to fit alongside the wide grille. The performance puts up in the supercar class.

Top speed is fixed to 155 mph, also it can reach 60 mph in approximately 5.7 seconds - that's slightly quicker compared to Jaguar XK, because of the larger engine. Other competitors include the Mercedes-Benz SL and Porsche 911.

Looks could be deceiving. The automobile is wide and low, and appears big. In fact, it is quite compact, just 177.5 inches long and 72.2 " wide. The vehicle looks pretty good, particularly from your side. And also you get a very practical SLK-lookalike opening roof. I guess most convertibles will be 'metal' convertibles soon, as well as the rag tops will disappear - perhaps not on all supercars. To save lots of weight, the top of the XLR is aluminum and magnesium.

Good output

Also, the XLR has quite a lot of power: 326 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 312 lb ft (423 Nm)at 4,400 rpm from GM's Northstar 4.6 liter V-8, which may work a little harder - 350-360 bhp, which will 't be difficult to get out of this engine, will make things more interesting.

Since it is, it is enough to get the car quite a shove, and as the Northstar comes with an aluminum block and head with dohc and four valves per cylinder, it revs well. Variable valve timing raises the spread of power, too.

The engine is coupled to a rear mounted five-speed automatic transmission - 5 speeds place it with a disadvantage up against the European supercars which mostly have six-speed automatics, but it is built to give sporty shifts. Because the box is rear-mounted as well as the engine is fairly well back, front/rear weight distribution is 50/50.

New frame concept

According to GM's new platform for sporty cars shared with the Corvette, the XLR has a fairly light frame of hydro-formed steel tubes. Hydroforming changes the form quite dramatically, investing in bends, changing the section to a rectangle and so forth, making a lightweight frame. The passenger compartment is aluminum, along with the panels are composite plastics. This is a structure that can contend with many a supercar.

+
It is a fairly light structure, and inspite of the advanced level of kit, the car weighs a healthy 3,643 lb (1,654 kg) that is just 130 lb a lot more than the newest lightweight Jaguar XK, as well as a great deal more than the Corvette with a lower spec but bigger engine.

Double wishbone suspension
+

+
Suspension may be the familiar Corvette style of double wishbones back and front with transverse leaf springs. The result is an easy, lightweight system that provides more roll stiffness - capacity roll - than coil springs. Also, the spring rates are progressive, therefore it irons out big bumps in the road almost as easily very little ones. There is also a front anti-roll bar.
+

+
In order to save weight, the double wishbones front and rear are aluminum; of course, the composite leaf springs are light, too. Leaf springs with this type - just one single leaf - are actually quite advanced technology because they don't locate the wheels, and involve some clever manufacturing techniques.

The dampers would be the new continuously variable electro-magnetic type, and also the steering is speed sensitive, so you get more assistance at low speed.

Because a Cadillac, it arrives with a higher specification. For Europe, navigation, and heated/cooled seats are standard much like adaptive speed control along with a head-up display. The inside, using its wood, leather and aluminum trim is fairly pleasant

Built in exactly the same plant and also to the same concept as the Corvette, the Cadillac XLR is most beneficial thought of a softened up Corvette designed for people who desire a better ride.

Visibility is great thanks to slim pillars in the opening roof, as well as the almost flat hood. Like the Corvette both the instruments and driving position are fantastic. Additionally there is a head-up display which shows only the speed and which gear you have, and you don't seem capable of shut off. Pity. I did not believe it is useful.

The steering just isn't bad at all, and the XLR turns in well, as you'd expect your weight distribution, but when you begin pressing, you commence to feel a little understeer coming in, which isn't bad for your market this really is targeted at - more the luxury sports car how the hard charging supercar driver. Nevertheless the car does not corner as soon as you might with increased neutral steering.

The automatic is good. In D, the performance just isn't bad in any way, and the kick-down is fairly aggressive. Additionally there is a manual mode. Push the lever across to the left, then nudge it forward for up, and back for down. This works well, and in actual fact is really a manual. I mean, some of these actually shift up once you hit peak revs. Not that one; it just lets you stay there till you're ready.
