Bencana alam tsunami di Indonesia sudah pernah terjadi 184 kali sejak tahun 1600 – 2007.  Penyebab tsunami Indonesia adalah gempa bumi di laut, letusan gunung api, tanah longsor di laut dan belum tercatat karena jauhnya meteor di laut. Mungkin kita sudah tahu semua bahwa Kejadian tsunami yang disebabkan oleh letusan gunung api pernah terjadi di Indonesia pada tahun 1883 karena letusan gunung api Krakatau tapi ada yang tahu kalau kejadian tsunami karena tanah longsor di laut pernah terjadi pada tahun 1979 di kepulauan Lomblen Nusa Tenggara Timur.

Dikarenakan 90% kejadian tsunami di Indonesia disebabkan oleh gempa bumi, maka saya menampilkan gambar di atas yang menunjukkan kejadian bencana alam tsunami dengan berbagai mekanisme sumber gempa bumi. Berdasarkan mekanisme sumber tersebut, 75% kejadian tsunami disebabkan oleh gempa bumi karena sumber gempanya berupa sesar naik, 20% karena sesar geser, dan 5% karena sesar normal (Puspito, N.T, 2008). Contoh kejadian tsunami akibat sesar naik pada abad ke-21 yang paling fenomenal dan mengejutkan semua orang adalah tsunami Aceh 2004.
