Korean Movies

Here are some 10 Korean movies in history a few years i enjoyed. These range from the comic to the tragic, and involve both action movies and historical dramas. Three seem to be extracted from events in Korea in the last 4 decades or so.

My Sassy Girl - Based on a true to life story that a man posted on the web, My Sassy Girl became all the rage in East Asia back 2001, if this was popular in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. This resulted in a forgettable direct-to-disc American remake in 2008, starring Elisha Cuthbert (who's unforgettable). My Sassy Girl is all about an excellent guy who meets a drunk girl Known only because the "Girl" - about the subway, and all sorts of odd adventures they enter while falling for each other. You may never believe the location where the plot gets into this one.

Joint Security Area (JSA) - The Joint Security Area will be the DMZ between North Korea and Columbia, and this movie tells the storyline of the double-shooting within the JSA. This brings about increasing tensions for both sides of the borders, an investigation with a Swiss-Korean woman and nearly a couple of hours of great, if implausible, entertainment.

Oldboy - Oldboy is probably the more famous Korean movies with American audiences, famous enough that it hit CNN throughout the Virginia school shooting a short while ago. Oldboy is about a guy abducted and imprisoned in the accommodation for Many years, and just what happens when he escapes. Plan for the twist, along with seeing Oldboy go crazy with his hammer. If they ever actually get the U.S. remake of Oldboy made, it will suck so bad. There's just so many essential parts they might have to change for American audiences. Oldboy was great, though.

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance - Like Oldboy, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance was directed by Park Chan-wook, which is considered a part of his "vengeance trilogy" (together with Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance). Each time a woman leaves prison, after serving a sentence for any crime she didn't commit, it's time to mete out revenge from the real culprits.

Arahan - Arahan can be a 2004 action-comedy which was panned by critics, but found an audience. When the 6 Masters of Tao choose that an inept cop gets the Chi being an "Arahan" and rule the planet, you know that all kinds of wackiness will ensue. You'll either love this or hate it.

Silmido - Silmido is a South Korean island where, in 1968, a particular team of assassins were educated to assassinate former North Korean dictator, Kim Il-Sung, in retaliation for North Korea's attempt to assassinate the South Korean president. According to true events involving a 31-man team of either criminals or special forces soldiers, based on which team you talk to, Silmido requires a look a Korea's sordid past. In the event it was carried out with its run, Silmido was the very first South Korean movie to be viewed by Ten million Koreans within the theater.

The President's Last Bang - Another movie portraying events from South Korea's sordid past, The President's Last Bang is one of the 1979 assassination with the South Korean President by his friend and Intelligence Director. This could be a controversial movie anyway, however the story is told like a black comedy, which led to lawsuits and court rulings. For all those interested in Korean history and Korean film history, you must see this one.

Chunhyang - If you like period pieces, Chunhyang will be the story of the hidden love and marriage from the nobleman and the daughter of a courtesan in 18th century Korea. Chunhyang reveals the cruel realities of pre-modern Korean society. When the noble husband goes away for a time, the state takes curiosity about bride, that you know is going to lead to trouble.

Guns and Talk - After having a tearjerker, you might like to watch a comedy. Guns and Talk can be a comedy about four guys who decide to become a team of assassins. Each time a couple of detectives get on their case, things get yourself a little crazy. While Guns and Talk has a variety of implausible situations, if you go into the movie with the proper attitude, you need to like it. Guns and Talk features a slick visuals, though if you do not like occasional split-screens, you might have a pass.

Memories of Murder - One more Korean movie according to real events is Memories of Murder, concerning the serial killer who terrorized Columbia from 1986 to 1991. Memories of Murder was a hit with both critics and the audience, so expect a creative film that holds your attention.
