He was with the forces fighting their way out of North Africa and into Italy. He filmed at the Battle of Anzio, accepted the surrender of an SS unit in Milan, and shot footage of the body of Mussolini after his execution. He became a journalist after the War, and joined the BBC in 1957. The best of Whickers World is marked by his interviewing skills, including a remarkable encounter with murderous Haitian dictator Francois “Papa Doc” Duvalier in 1969. “You feel his menace in the pit of your stomach,” he intoned as he was filmed taking a cab nervously to the presidential palace. “So what is your secret for control?” he asked the dictator. “My secret is top secret,” Duvalier replied smiling.
