The sound of the organ being played in the church across the way from his home had since childhood attracted him to the Church, and after completing his degree he stayed in Cambridge to read Theology and prepare for Holy Orders at Ridley Hall. It was in Cambridge that he had his first encounter with Coventry Cathedral when, with the university Musical Society, he sang, in company with his future wife, in a memorable first performance of Britten’s War Requiem following the re-consecration of the war-damaged building. |
