Routt County could be the 15th most extensive from the 64 counties with the state of Colorado from the United States. As in the 2010 census, the populace was 23,509. The county seat is Steamboat Springs.

Routt County was developed out of the western area of Grand County on January 29, 1877. It was named in honor of John Long Routt, the last territorial and first state governor of Colorado. The western part of Routt County was split on form Moffat County on February 27, 1911.

According to the 2000 census, the county carries a total area of 2,368.02 square miles (6,133.1 km2), of which 2,361.59 square miles (6,116.5 km2) (or 99.73 percent) is land and 6.43 square miles (16.7 km2) (or 0.27 percent) is water.
