Growing from the same roots as Western circus (which were only available in London in the 18th Millennium when trick-rider Philip Astley opened up the first circus), Aussie circus has developed its own distinct personality. Particularly it was at the forefront of the improvement New (or Nouveau) Circus in the 1970s as well as 80s - where Circus Oz and also the Flying Fresh fruit Fly Circus were two of the greatest gamers.

Formed in 1978 by the merger associated with two section, Soapbox Festival and New Ensemble Circus, Ounce was major non-animal circuses to really make it large, predating Cirque du Soleil by about six years. Politically motivated, Oz operated on principles of gender equality and collective ownership - the performers were at the center of the show, co-devising the fabric. Rather than have just one take action per artist, the first shows did find a small toss taking on several roles and dealing with multiple abilities.

Created the year right after Oz, and at times operating closely with them, The actual Flying Fruit Travel Circus was obviously a performing troupe, but did its most significant work coaching young artists who else went on to join other circuses. Within 1983 members of China's Nanjing Acrobatic Troupe participated within a training program with Fruit Travel that helped teach and spread Chinese language circus procedures (esoteric adjustment, hoop scuba diving, etcetera) through the entire Australian circus scene - an important injection of new ability. Please click on Elefantenshow for more specifics and information on this particular field.

Many of the features of New Circus - work without animals, use of devised material, self-awareness and self-satire, open crossform methods to train - still exist in Aussie circus today.

In the forefront of Australian contemporary circus, Circus Oz are still going strong (they famous their 30th birthday in 2008), but additional, newer companies impacting the actual international picture. Tom Dan Crew have seen great success mixing circus along with hip-hop (their show combines rugby, turntabulism as well as beatboxing), whilst ThisSideUp Acrobatics have been lauded for his or her show Controlled Falling Task, a skills-piece where the performers are the pawns of a mad teacher whose experiments strive to test the bounds from the body. Acrobat really are a three-person cohorte making work that embodies the title of the latest creation, Smaller, Poorer, Less expensive.
