The sound of snoring is brought on by the airways in your nose and throat being partially or completely blocked. It causes dilemmas for the snorer and anyone who sleeps with or near them.

Sleep apnea can be a more severe problem that occurs when the air congestion causes one to stop breathing at the least 5-times an hour, for over 10 seconds each time. Sleep apnea is a dangerous situation that can ultimately lead to death.

If you are suspected of experiencing sleep apnea, your medical practitioner may request you to get your nose and throat examined to locate any obvious causes of obstruction. This might include a physiological abnormality or nasal polyps. The exam is managed with both an endoscopic exam or a CT scan.

After the initial examination is performed you'll be provided for a sleep laboratory where you'll undertake a report of your sleeping patterns.

A sleep study monitors the body when you sleep. A number of the proportions that will be followed include:

- blood oxygen levels

- blood-pressure

- heartbeat

- air-flow

- chest & diaphragm activity

- head action

You'll stay over night in a special sleep laboratory where these tests is going to be done with equipment that's attached to you while you sleep. (It's never as bad as it seems - you will manage to sleep!)

Should you be diagnosed with sleep apnea, you'll probably be told to prevent almost any sleep medications and alcohol. If you're overweight, you'll be recommended to lose the excess weight. It's also possible to be told to start sleeping on your part.

These three simple things can often be enough to solve the problem.

If this is not enough to treat the problem, you may undertake other anti snoring remedies including positive pressure ventilation, in which you'll get a closely fitting nasal mask through which air is moved. The increased air pressure can help keep your airways open.

If these treatments still do not solve the issue, you may have to undergo surgery.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) could be the most frequent type of the condition and usually responds to treatment. Central sleep apnea, in which there might be brain or nerve damage, is often much less tuned in to therapy. In these instances you will need to treat them with drugs that excite your breathing. patent pending
