Originally called by the name El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles ("the pueblo of our lady the queen of angels"), the town was founded in the year 1781. On the following century, the Mexicans, Spanish, and Americans successfully ruled LA. In 1821, when Mexico achieved its freedom, the Spanish rule ended, and the town came under its jurisdiction.
