Korean Movies

Here are some 10 Korean movies of the past several years that I enjoyed. These range from the comic to the tragic, and involve both action movies and historical dramas. Three seem to be taken from events in Korea within the last 40 years roughly.

My Sassy Girl - With different true to life story that the man posted on the web, My Sassy Girl became all the rage in East Asia in 2001, when it was popular in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. This triggered a forgettable direct-to-disc American remake in 2008, starring Elisha Cuthbert (who's unforgettable). My Sassy Girl is all about a college guy who meets a drunk girl - known only as the "Girl" - around the subway, and all the odd adventures they enter into while falling in love. You'll never believe the location where the plot goes in this.

Joint Security Area (JSA) - The Joint Security Area will be the DMZ between North Korea and Mexico, and also this movie tells the tale of a double-shooting within the JSA. This leads to increasing tensions on both sides of the borders, a study by a Swiss-Korean woman and nearly two hours of great, if implausible, entertainment.

Oldboy - Oldboy is probably the more famous Korean movies with American audiences, famous enough it hit CNN throughout the Virginia school shooting a few years ago. Oldboy is all about a person abducted and imprisoned in a hotel room for Fifteen years, and just what comes about when he escapes. Prepare for the twist, in addition to seeing Oldboy drink too much together with his hammer. Should they ever actually obtain the U.S. remake of Oldboy made, it will suck so bad. There's just too many essential parts they would must change for American audiences. Oldboy was great, though.

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance - Like Oldboy, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance was directed by Park Chan-wook, and this is considered part of his "vengeance trilogy" (in addition to Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance). Each time a woman leaves prison, after serving a sentence to get a crime she didn't commit, you're ready to mete out revenge from the real culprits.

Arahan - Arahan is a 2004 action-comedy that has been panned by critics, but found viewers. When the 6 Masters of Tao determine that an inept cop gets the Chi to become an "Arahan" and rule the world, you are aware that all sorts of wackiness will probably ensue. You'll either love this one or hate it.

Silmido - Silmido is really a South Korean island where, in 1968, a particular team of assassins were educated to assassinate former North Korean dictator, Kim Il-Sung, in retaliation for North Korea's attempt to assassinate the South Korean president. Based on true events involving a 31-man team of either criminals or special forces soldiers, based on who you talk to, Silmido needs a look a Korea's sordid past. If this was through with its run, Silmido was the first South Korean movie being viewed by Tens of millions of Koreans within the theater.

The President's Last Bang - Another movie portraying events from South Korea's sordid past, The President's Last Bang is among the 1979 assassination of the South Korean President by uncle and Intelligence Director. This is a controversial movie anyway, however the story is told like a black comedy, which triggered lawsuits and court rulings. For those thinking about Korean background Korean film history, you need to check this out one.

Chunhyang - If you want period pieces, Chunhyang will be the story of the hidden love and marriage between a nobleman as well as the daughter of a courtesan in 1700s Korea. Chunhyang reveals the cruel realities of pre-modern Korean society. When the noble husband goes away completely for a time, the official takes curiosity about the bride to be, which you know will result in trouble.

Guns and Talk - After a tearjerker, you might like to watch a comedy. Guns and Talk is really a comedy about four guys who decide to become team of assassins. Each time a couple of detectives get on their case, things obtain a little crazy. While Guns and Talk includes a variety of implausible situations, should you type in the movie with the right attitude, you ought to want it. Guns and Talk features a slick visuals, though if you do not like occasional split-screens, you could have a pass.

Memories of Murder - Another Korean movie depending on real events is Memories of Murder, about the murderer who terrorized South Korea from 1986 to 1991. Memories of Murder would be a hit with both critics and the audience, so expect an artistic film that holds your attention.
