Originally called by the name El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles ("the pueblo of our lady the queen of angels"), the town was founded in the year 1781. In the next century, the Mexicans, Spanish, and Americans successfully ruled Los Angeles. In 1821, when Mexico achieved its freedom, the Spanish rule ended, and the town came under its authority.
